HM Prison Beechworth operated between 1864 and 2004. It cost 47,000 pounds to construct with granite quarried on site. It stands on the ground of Beechworths first stockade. Notable inmates - Ned Kelly, Joe Byrne, Steve Hart & Aaron Sherritt. There were eight executions in the gallows with the bodies said to be buried along the inside western wall.
Great place to visit to capture the rustic charm of old architecture and learn some great Australian history. Definitely visit the bakery...it was the best bakery I've ever been to (the bee stings are to die for) Nic x
